Harstad is the third-largest city in Northern Norway by population, after Tromsø and Bodø. Both the northbound and southbound Hurtigruten call at Harstad early in the morning, one after the other. On the southbound journey, Harstad is the beginning of the popular (and well worth-it) ‘Taste of Vesterålen’ excursion, whereas the northbound ship (which calls at Harstad before the southbound), is in port for one hour, giving you around 45 minutes to explore Harstad. Most of you will probably prefer to sleep in or have breakfast, but for the eager few who want to go for a morning walk, I’ve included a small walking path at the bottom of this overview. For everyone, Harstad is well-worth reading about.
