Tour Description
Discover the true flavours of Bergen on a guided culinary walk through the city’s historic centre. This small-group experience includes 14 generous tastings at locally owned businesses, highlighting the food traditions of Bergen and the best seasonal produce West Norway has to offer.
We begin at Bergen’s famous Fish Market, where you’ll sample fresh, seasonal seafood straight from the fjords. For those who are curious, there is also the opportunity to try whale — a traditional coastal delicacy that has long been part of Norway’s food culture. Along the way, you’ll learn how the sea has shaped Bergen’s identity for generations.
Next, we visit a local supermarket to discover the everyday favourites Norwegians love. I mean – who doesn’t love visiting a supermarket in a foreign country? Here you’ll taste unique snacks rarely found outside Norway, including brunost — a sweet and savoury brown cheese with a distinctive caramelised flavour.
At Baker Brun, a family-run Bergen institution, you’ll enjoy a freshly baked skillingsbolle — the cinnamon bun that is unique to Bergen and a proud symbol of the city’s baking traditions.
We then visit Fjåk, an award-winning chocolate maker known for bold Nordic flavours. Here you’ll sample their famous brown cheese cheesecake, indulge in what many guests call the best hot chocolate they’ve ever tasted, and enjoy a guided chocolate tasting.
To round out the tour, we head up to Fløirestauranten, where you’ll savour a seasonal local meat and fish dish, along with a carefully selected meat and cheese platter. You’ll also enjoy a tasting of West Norway’s renowned local apple cider. You’ll get included tickets for the Fløibanen funicular.
Every stop on this tour is independently owned, and every tasting is thoughtfully chosen to reflect Bergen’s culinary heritage and the rhythm of the seasons. Come hungry and leave with a deeper understanding of the food, history and culture that make Bergen so special.
Highlights
What sets the Taste of Bergen Food Tour apart is how it uses food as a lens to understand the city itself. Rather than chasing famous dishes or headline venues, the experience focuses on how Bergen’s identity as a coastal trading city and UNESCO City of Gastronomy is reflected in what locals actually eat today. Each stop adds context — not just about the food on your plate, but about the people, seasons and traditions behind it.
Another highlight is the choice of venues. Instead of well-known or tourist-driven spots, the tour slips into neighbourhood cafés, bars and restaurants that locals frequent themselves. These relaxed, everyday places give the tour a genuine feel, offering insight into Bergen’s food culture as it’s lived, not staged. It’s a chance to see how the city eats away from the crowds.
The guides play a big role in shaping the experience. As locals from Bergen, they share personal stories, local habits and thoughtful observations that turn tastings into conversations. The tone is informal and engaging, allowing the tour to adapt naturally to the group — whether curiosity leans towards food traditions, modern Nordic cuisine, or everyday life in the city.
By the end, the tour offers more than a satisfying meal. You’ll leave with a clearer sense of Bergen’s culinary character, confidence navigating the local food scene, and a handful of places you’ll want to return to on your own. It’s not just about eating well — it’s about getting a true taste of Bergen.
