Five Unique Shops in Bergen

Bergen might be best known for its dramatic fjords and charming timber houses, but dig a little deeper and you’ll find it also has a thriving independent retail scene that’s as quirky as it is captivating. Whether you’re after vintage fashion, traditional craftsmanship, niche cultural treasures or football memorabilia with a local twist, Bergen has a hidden gem waiting for you. Step off the beaten path and explore these five distinctive shops that offer a more personal – and often more affordable – alternative to the usual tourist fare. From woolly wonders to Nordic mythology, tea ceremonies and textile adventures, this guide will point you towards some of the city’s most memorable retail experiences. Here are five shops in Bergen you should visit!

Did you know?

We pass many of these shops on our popular “Bergen Past & Present” tour. You can take a look at the tour by clicking here.

UFF

Address: Fortunen 4 | Click here to view Instagram

The traditional Norwegian wool sweater has become increasingly vogue in recent years, reflected in most souvenir shops now charging extraordinary prices for even the simplest designs. So, if you’re looking for a sweater at a reasonable cost, check out UFF.

This is an excellent secondhand shop downtown with a broad range of clothes at bargain prices, including a great selection of colourful wool sweaters that are guaranteed to keep you warm throughout the seasons. Just remember to wash it sparingly and at low temperatures! And even if you’re not looking for a wool sweater, UFF boasts an incredible collection of pretty much any type of clothing: looking for denim, leather jackets, winter coats, blazers, shirts or summer dresses? Chances are you’ll find what you’re looking for here.

Tedragen

Address: Jacobsfjorden 7 | Click here to view Instagram

The biggest niche entry on our list is Tedragen (The Tea Dragon), a shop like nothing else Bergen has to offer. As the name suggests, this place specialises in tea and imports a wide selection of high-quality Asian tea leaves. It also provides all kinds of tools for teamaking, including cups, sieves, whisks, pots, tablecloths and even conveniently sized travel sets. It is a haven for any tea enthusiast, and the staff are only too happy to share their knowledge and passion while offering demonstrations and taste samples. Tedragen also has the arguably most beautiful location of any shop on this list, situated right in the middle of the 18th-century historical wooden buildings at the UNESCO site of Bryggen.

Nidhogg Gallery

Address: Bryggen 37

While on the topic of dragons and conveniently located in the same building as Tedragen, Nidhogg is the name of the great worm gnawing at the world tree’s roots in Norse mythology. It is also the name of Bergen’s arguably most famous tattoo parlour, specialising in designs found in Viking age and later Medieval designs and motifs. If you don’t have the time or inclination to get an actual tattoo during your stay in Bergen, fear not: the Nidhogg Gallery also offers a wide range of paper prints, wooden carvings and jewellery in the same style. This is the perfect place to pick up a unique gift or souvenir that is distinctively Scandinavian and unique to Bergen. A superb alternative to the plastic trolls found in more conventional souvenir shops on the waterfront.

Fdb. 343

Address: Jacobsfjorden 7 | Click here to view Instagram

Not everyone who goes clothes shopping does so in search of wool sweaters: some are also on the lookout for a local football/soccer jersey, and as with the previously mentioned wool sweaters, this has also become a very pricey commodity in recent years. That is why Fotballdraktbutikken AS, commonly known as Fdb 343, in Strandgaten has quickly become a local favorite in downtown Bergen for football enthusiasts. Here you’ll find a broad selection of jerseys from the local team, Brann (meaning “fire” in Norwegian. Join one of our tours to discover why this name choice is so deliciously ironic). You’ll also discover jerseys from all over the world that have found their way to Western Norway, from Latin America to Southeast Asia. The guys behind the counter are passionate Brann supporters and will gladly share their passion for Brann and Bergen with any visitor.
