How to Take the Local Bus in Bergen
Here is our guide to getting out and exploring Bergen with public transport.
Planning a romantic weekend in Bergen? From charming city streets to dramatic fjords, peaceful islands and adventurous mountain escapes, Bergen offers unforgettable experiences for couples. Whether you’re after cosy relaxation, outdoor adventures or exceptional food with a view, these romantic trips around Bergen have something for every kind of love story.
Who says you need to leave the city to have a romantic weekend? Bergen is already the perfect setting for a cozy, memorable getaway. Here are some easy ideas to make the most of your stay.
Let’s start with accommodation. Bergen has great hotels for a weekend escape: the iconic Bergen Charmante, wellness-focused spots like Skostredet Hotel & Spa and Hotel Norge, or historic gems like Bergen Børs and Opus XVI. Prefer something more private? Airbnb has plenty of cute apartments. For that classic Scandinavian vibe, look for places in Nøstet or Fløen: quiet streets, wooden houses, very hygge, very søt.
To truly experience the city, its history, and its treasures, join a tour with us, because… who loves Bergen more than I Love Bergen? We’ll give tips, help you plan your days, and make sure you have fun while exploring.
Bergen is famous for its seven mountains, so getting to at least one viewpoint is a must. Not into hiking? Take the Fløyen funicular or the Ulriken cable car and enjoy amazing fjord views. Want to make it extra romantic? Catch it at sunset. Feeling adventurous? Try Stoltzekleiven, 908 steps and a serious incline, basically a relationship test. For even more adrenaline, check out the Høyt & Lavt climbing park or the Ulriken zipline.
Going to a museum is always a solid plan, but here are some fun alternatives if you want something a bit less conventional: beer tasting at 7 Fjell, a themed wine class at Moon, a ceramic workshop with Råbrent, painting your own pieces at Paint on Pots, or even a Paint ’n Sip session to mix art with a glass (or two) of something nice.
And now, my absolute favourite plan in Bergen: saunas. If you’ve joined a tour with me, you already know the obsession is real. I recommend Laugaren, a volunteer-built and volunteer-run floating sauna with the best atmosphere. It’s won several awards, including “Sauna of the Year 2024.” They offer a range of experiences, including oil and leaf rituals, poetry, and small concerts. Every visit feels special. Check their website for more info.
Bergen is also full of culture, concerts, and festivals. Check the programs at Grieghallen or Den Nationale Scene for your dates. And if you need more recommendations closer to your trip, send us a message; we’re happy to help.
For dinner, consider three Michelin-starred restaurants: enjoy modern Norwegian cuisine at Lysverket, step into the intimate and mysterious Gaptrast, or indulge in Japanese Omakase by Sergey Pak. Tip: book in advance, tables fill up fast! If you’re looking for something cozier, creative, and more budget-friendly, Moon is a great option. Another favourite is Restaurant Pinocchio, tucked into the ground floor of a spectacular 17th-century building, serving small plates inspired by flavours from around the world.
If you’re dreaming of a weekend filled with fjord views, fresh air and really good food, take a car from Bergen and drive south into the Hardangerfjord. It’s close, scenic, and packed with places that feel almost unreal.
Start with the big one: Folgefonna. Glaciers, mountains and blue ice that looks like it’s been edited with a filter – except it’s real. You can join guided hikes on the ice, explore the viewpoints, or just enjoy the landscape if you want to keep things chill. Either way, this area sets the tone for the whole weekend.
Base yourself in Bondhus, a quiet little corner surrounded by dramatic nature. Hotel Sundal is a classic spot to stay: cozy, historic, and just the right vibe for a peaceful fjord escape. After a full day outdoors, it hits differently. Bonus: they harvest, preserve, pickle, and smoke ingredients from Hardanger to serve fresh local food all year round, so every meal tastes like the fjord itself.
From Bondhus, you can take a short, easy hike to Bondhusvatnet, with amazing views of the Folgefonna Glacier. Just a short drive from Bondhus is Rosendal, a tiny fjord village oozing charm. Wander around the Barony, sip coffee by the water, and let the slow pace of village life work its magic. It’s small, cute, and perfect for a relaxed afternoon.
Want to take your day up a notch? Head to Iris Salmon, a Michelin-starred gem. The restaurant sits inside the stunning floating structure called the “Salmon Eye,” right on Hardangerfjord. Hop on a short boat ride from Rosendal, and you’ll find yourself dining with an unparalleled view of the fjord. Tip: you need to book well in advance to get a table, so plan ahead and secure this unforgettable experience.
Let’s talk about a place that hosts the world’s biggest extreme sports festival (Ekstremsportveko), is one of the top weekend escapes for Bergen locals AND has even impressed Gordon Ramsay. The best part? You don’t need a car to get there, hop on a train from the city centre.
We’re going to Voss: pure adventure, pure relaxation.
Getting there is super simple. You can head to Bergen train station and grab a ticket either at the station or online at vy.no. The ride takes about an hour, and the views alone are worth it.
For accommodation, you’ve got fantastic options. Stay at the historic Fleischers Hotel, or choose something unique like the Elva Hotel. Both have impressive wellness areas, perfect for unwinding after a full day of sightseeing and activities. Of course, you can also do Voss as a day trip if you’re short on time.
Now, the fun part: activities. Voss has something for absolutely everyone: from chill plans to “please don’t tell my mom” levels of adventure. Think skydiving, paragliding, mountain climbing, rafting, SUP, kayaking… You name it. You can also go on a unique hike in the heart of the Nærøyfjord World Heritage area or join a mountain-bike tour.
And if you’ve ever wondered what it feels like to fly, you can try Norway’s first vertical recirculating wind tunnel. Yes, you can literally float.
If you’re more in the mood for a slow day, no worries. Go for a guided fjord & glacier tour, or book a cider tasting experience where you’ll learn about traditional cider making and enjoy some local treats.
For dinner, I highly recommend Elva Restaurant for a proper fine-dining moment; it received 1 Michelin Key in the 2025 Michelin Guide. Another great option is Hangurstoppen Restaurant, located at the top of the Voss Gondol, at 818 masl (2,683 ft asl), serving homemade dishes made with local ingredients from farms around Voss. The views? Incredible.
This plan is all about slowing down, breathing in salty sea air, and enjoying life by the water. We’re heading to Sotra, one of the favourite seaside escapes for people living in Bergen.
Sotra is known for its rugged coastline, cliffs, endless ocean views and that “I could stay here forever” feeling. It’s the perfect place for a peaceful getaway without going too far.
When it comes to accommodation, you’ve got plenty of options. On Airbnb, you’ll find lots of classic wooden cabins – hytter in Norwegian – often with huge windows facing the sea, which is precisely what you want here. There are hotels as well, and I personally recommend Panorama Hotel & Spa, a super popular relaxation spot among Bergen locals.
Getting there is easy. Sotra is well connected to Bergen by bus, but travel time depends on your accommodation. For example, the trip to Panorama Hotel takes about 1.5 hours on buses 450 and 455. If you rent a car, the trip will take about 45 minutes.
This chapter is all about sea activities, because that’s where Sotra really shines. Many accommodations and the Panorama Hotel offer boat rentals. You can rent one for half a day or a full day, cruise along the rocky coastline, explore small coves with turquoise waters, and enjoy the calm. Take a few fishing rods, catch your dinner, and grill it by the sea—Peak Scandi experience.
You can also go kayaking, which is super popular in Bergen during summer. Kayaks are stable and beginner-friendly, and several places (including hotels and local companies) offer rentals. It’s the perfect way to explore the coastline at your own pace.
And of course… saunas 😉 Sotra has the amazing Havblikk Fjordsauna, which is basically a sauna boat. You can use it while it’s parked at the harbour and dip in the sea after each round, OR you can rent your own sauna cruise and float around the fjord in full steamy glory. Come on… being able to tell your friends you swam in the North Sea? Absolutely unbeatable.
This one is for the true romantics, for the couples who want a trip that feels unforgettable, recharging, soft, slow, and wrapped in jaw-dropping scenery. Imagine immersing yourself in the beautiful Bjørnafjorden landscape, with the Kvinnherad Alps rising in the background. We’re heading to a historic treasure built in 1896 by Christian Michelsen, Norway’s first prime minister: Solstrand Hotel & Bath.
Getting there is easy. You can take the express boat or the bus 600 from Bergen bus station to Os (around 1 hour). If you prefer to drive, it’s about 30 minutes by car.
Once you’re there, mornings feel like magic. You wake up to fresh sea air, calm fjord waters, birdsong, and that quiet atmosphere that only nature can give you. Breakfast is local and homemade, served in a timeless setting.
Here, relaxation is the main event. You can swim in the heated seawater pool, dip into the fjord if you’re brave, or warm up in the sauna with stunning views. The hotel also offers treatments inspired by Scandinavian traditions, such as the Nordic Zen body ritual, ideal for couples seeking to unwind.
If you want to add a bit more activity to your day, you can borrow single or double touring kayaks, join a guided kayak trip, or even take out a classic Norwegian wooden boat for free. You can also book a romantic fishing trip timed with the sunset, try snorkelling in the clear fjord water, or even take a diving course.
Since you’re so close to Bergen, you can easily plan a day trip to the city and join one of our guided tours with I Love Bergen. We’ll make sure you get the best tips so you can enjoy your visit to the fullest. You can also book fjord tours to places like Bekkjarvik or Rosendal, or take a boat to visit Lysøen, the island home of the legendary composer Ole Bull.
For dinner, the hotel restaurant offers a three-course menu each evening, featuring seasonal ingredients and local products: fjord seafood, lamb from western Norway, apples from Hardangerfjord, cheeses from the Bergen region, and eggs from a nearby farm. The restaurant is reserved only for hotel guests and day-spa visitors, which keeps the atmosphere intimate and special.
A romantic weekend in Bergen is never just one kind of experience. It can be slow and cosy, adventurous and wild, or deeply relaxing — sometimes all in the same trip. Whether you choose to stay in the city, escape to the fjords, explore mountain landscapes, unwind on a quiet island, or indulge in timeless luxury by the water, Bergen offers the perfect setting for meaningful moments together.
What makes Bergen truly special for couples is the variety. In just a short distance, you can move from cultural city life to raw nature, from intimate dinners to unforgettable outdoor adventures. However you choose to spend your time, this is a place where memories are made naturally — without rushing, without noise, and with plenty of room to simply enjoy each other.
So pack your bags, slow the pace, and let Bergen do the rest.
