This tour is designed to keep you out of the cold in winter and explore Bergen’s main highlights. We begin at the Bergen Fortress, where you’ll learn about Bergen’s time as the capital of Norway, the Danish union, and the current monarchy.
We then visit Bryggen, Bergen’s UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here you’ll hear about the Hanseatic League and importance of trade in Bergen.
The last thirty minutes of the tour is spent inside the Bryggens Museum, where you’ll visit the archaeological site where Bergen’s first wooden warehouses were discovered. Everything from Bergen in the 13th century is on display here, and the highlight are the collection of runic inscriptions.
This historic tour is designed to provide you with an overview of Bergen’s main attractions. We also made this tour for winter, so most of the tour is undercover or indoors. This way you can continue to explore the city but not get too wet or cold!
Magda was fantastic. She is an expert on the history, architecture, culture and the city in general. She has a great personality and her command of the English language was spectacular. Our group all felt the same. We were very lucky to have such a great guide. The tour is wonderful. Short – as advertised – but full of good information and recommendations. The museum is a must-see and the information provided was relevant and interesting. We also followed the tour by visiting the recommended Theta Museum which was worth stopping by. Highly recommended.
We had a wonderful time learning the history of Bergen and Norway. Dane took us through some of the less beaten paths which was very nice. He had a wealth of knowledge and stories to share. He was also very helpful giving us tips and recommendations for food and drinks around the city. I highly recommend this tour!!
We meet at the address Bradbenken 1, under a brick building next door to the Thon Hotel Orion, a large blue skyscraper (by Norwegian standards). The meeting spot is across the street from the Bergenhus Fortress.
Inside the Bryggens Museum, so you can explore at your own pace.
Approximately 1.5km (1 mi). The walk is all flat, though there is some cobblestone. It is graded as an easy walk.
This walk covers the area around the fortress and Bryggen. The walking length is approximately 1.5km (1 mile).
For those coming on a cruise ship, the walk begins five minutes from the piers ‘Skolten’ and ‘Bontelabo’
