Hey there!

Thanks for booking our walking tour. To help you prepare for the tour, here is some practical information.

Where to Meet

The tour begins outside the Rosenkrantz Tower, a rectangular historic stone building in front of the Bergen Fortress.

To get there:

  • Enter the fortress through a grey stone archway with a golden ‘C’ on it
  • After you come through the archway, on your left will be a tall, rectangular tower. This is the Rosenkrantz Tower
  • In front of the tower is a large sign saying “ROSENKRANTZTÅRNET” with a picture of the tower on it
  • The guide will be there at least 10 minutes before the tour start time holding a sign with the tour name on it
  • If using GPS, the closest street address is “Bergenhus 3”

Coming from a cruise ship?

We are able to help with directions, but please note there are three cruise ports in Bergen.

Please let us know if you are coming from a cruise ship! We track the cruise ships and can give you specific directions.

Public Transportation

The closest bus stop is ‘Bradbenken’. The following buses stop here:

  • Towards the city (from Sandviken, Åsane)
    • Bus 3 towards Vadmyra
    • Bus 4 towards Hesjaholtet
    • Bus 12 towards Lægdene – Montana
    • Bus 16e towards Nesttun terminal
    • Get off at Bradbenken, cross the street, enter the fortress
  • Away from the city (from Christies gate or Torget)
    • Bus 3 towards Stobotn
    • Bus 4 towards Flaktveit
    • Bus 12 towards Lønborglien
    • Bus 19 towards Åsane Terminal
    • You can get off at either Bryggen or Bontelabo. Both are equal walking distance to Håkons Hall (about a 4 minute walk)

The meeting point is 1.2km (0.7 mi) from the Bybanen light rail stop.

Please email us if you want help with public transport.

Practical Information

  • We do not stop for coffee or restrooms during the tour. There are public toilets at the fortress that you can use (for free) before the tour begins. Arrive a little early and we can assist you in finding the bathroom. If you need to use the restrooms during the tour, please let us know.
  • We will be walking up-hill on cobblestone. It is not steep and it is very short, but it is definitely worth it!
  • No audio transmitters are used during this tour. We don’t want to feel too touristy (and also we could never afford those devices!), but that means we guarantee small groups so you are able to hear the guide.

Our Guides

We are a small team of licenced, passionate guides and are super excited to show you Bergen. You will receive an email and SMS the night before your tour with your guides name. Our guides are:

  • Emma (Owner, Australian living in Bergen for 7+ years, guiding for 7+ years)
  • Magda (Polish living in Bergen for 10+ years, guiding for 10+ years)
  • Dane (Norwegian living in Bergen for several years. Works at Bryggens Museum)
  • Josina (German living in Bergen for a few years. Freelance guide across all of Norway)

  • Neal (German/Brit living in Bergen for several years. Freelance guide across Western Norway)

All of our guides are fluent in English and are trained as tour guides. We only want the highest quality at I Love Bergen. All of them live in the inner city centre and are able to talk about various aspects of everyday life.

There’s No Such Thing as Bad Weather

It rains in Bergen 250-ish days a year, so we couldn’t run a walking tour company if we cancelled every day it rains 🙂

The tour will not cancel due to rain, but it may be cancelled in the case of severe winds, blizzards, or otherwise conditions that make it unreasonable to be walking outside for 2+ hours. We will always notify you up to one hour before the tour begins.

Cancellation Policy

The cancellation policy depends on your booking platform, but generally you are able to cancel up to 24 hours before the tour begins and get a 100% refund.

If we cancel the tour, you will also be fully refunded. We will cancel the tour due to extreme weather, a guide getting COVID (fingers crossed that won’t happen), or other extreme circumstances. We will always try and put you on a different tour.

Join Our Other Tour: Historic Nordnes

The Nordnes Tour begins at 4:30pm on select days and is perfectly combined with A Walk Through Bergen Past & Present. The tour takes you truly off-the-beaten path to Bergen’s best-kept secret: The Nordnes peninsula. This is one of the most beautiful spots in the city and you’ll love exploring this area. We discuss Bergen’s history away from the Hanseatic League, including the churches, merchants, and court houses (including crime & execution).

Note – this tour is hilly but is one of the most beautiful walks in Bergen. 2 hours long. The first booking must be at least 24 hours in advance otherwise the tour does not run.
